Standing Work: Comfort & Productivity
Kevin J. Costello,
CPE, United States Ergonomics
2010 National Ergonomic Conference & Exposition
Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, NV : Nov. 30th - Dec. 3rd, 2010
The Boeing Corporation took the bold step of critically analyzing factors affecting extended periods of standing and walking in the workplace. Creating the right workplace conditions can realize the potential of increased productivity, which is dependent upon understanding what factors create optimal physiological reactions during standing and walking conditions. During this project, electromyography, pressure mapping, and computerized force plates were used to investigate the beneficial qualities of three types of floor mats and insoles. Data collection spanned over six months and involved 60 participants resulting in over 200 variables. The goal of this analysis was to maximize the effectiveness of floor matting and insole applications and to optimize the investment in these products.
Attendees will learn:
- How mats and insoles compare in different applications
- What levels of firmness or softness are most effective
- The relationships between comfort, effort and stability

Balancing Work Demands and Employee Capacity in Demanding Environments
Kevin J. Costello,
CPE, United States Ergonomics
2010 National Ergonomic Conference & Exposition
Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, NV : Nov. 30th - Dec. 3rd, 2010
Ergonomic risk increases when work requirements exceed the capacity of the employee. This issue is particularly common in physically demanding jobs, particularly those in uncontrolled environments. Despite heavy work demands, risks can be controlled and productivity maintained by measuring the work requirements and the employee's capacity. Industry examples, including oil and gas work, field and factory work, order picking in distribution centers and other workplaces where it becomes necessary to ensure the employees' capacity to meet work demands will be presented. Special attention will be paid to work situations in hot and humid environments.
This session will examine techniques, benefits and issues associated with:
- Measuring and quantifying physical work demands and factors affecting employee capacity
- Implementing a pre-employment screening program
- Relevant trends in employee health and fitness

Quantitative Ergonomic Strategies
Kevin J. Costello,
CPE, United States Ergonomics
2009 National Ergonomic Conference & Exposition
Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, NV : Dec. 1st -Dec. 5th
This session introduces quantitative approaches for assessing the ergonomics efficiency of work methods, equipment design, tools and employee techniques. The objective is to achieve measurable gains in production efficiency while reducing ergonomics risks. It is intended to work well within the structure of lean manufacturing and six-sigma programs. The primary focus involves advanced methods for quantifying workplace demands and establishing acceptable thresholds. The development of ergonomics specifications for workstations, tools and equipment are covered.
Attendees will leave this session with:
- Familiarity with the techniques and methods available to objectively measure ergonomics efficiency in the workplace
- Familiarity with the guidelines and thresholds that product, process and ergonomics engineers can use to assess tools, equipment, workstations and employee technique.

Product Purchasing Guidelines for the Healthcare Industry
Kevin J. Costello,
CPE, United States Ergonomics
2009 National Ergonomic Conference & Exposition
Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, NV : Dec. 1st -Dec. 5th
The session focuses on methods for evaluating the ergonomics appropriateness of products for use in the healthcare workplace. Standards and guidelines for ergonomic product performance will be reviewed as well as product purchasing specifications. Systems to support patient handling and treatment, electronic data management and hospital employee ergonomics will be discussed. Comparative product assessment methods will also be demonstrated.
At the completion of the workshop the attendees will know what to look for in a good ergonomic product, Their ability to evaluate and compare products prior to purchase will be enhanced. They will also understand how to integrate such a process into their business.

Human Factors and Ergonomic Risk Control Strategies in the Oil & Gas Industry
Kevin J. Costello,
CPE, United States Ergonomics
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia : August 3rd- 4th 2009
Park Royal Hotel
Also:
Bangkok, Thailand : August 5th- 6th 2009
Grand Hyatt Erawan
The session focuses on strategies for effectively implementing and managing the human factors and ergonomics efforts within the oil & gas industries. This course includes best practice examples and industry case studies. Applications include land and sea based exploration, drilling, transportation and refining operations. Techniques for establishing internal company standards and managing multi-site programs are included. In addition, attendees will learn to identify risk factors and workstation deficiencies and to recommend appropriate corrective actions. Human factors and ergonomic guidelines and standards including ISO 9241/TC159 are covered. The program offers valuable information for companies just beginning the ergonomics effort as well as companies with established programs who are looking to enhance their existing process.

Managing a Multi-Site Ergonomics Program
Kevin J. Costello,
CPE, United States Ergonomics
2008 National Ergonomic Conference & Exposition
Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, NV : Dec. 1st -Dec. 5th
Establishing standard practice, program monitoring and communication is key to managing a multi-site ergonomics program. A consistent set of parameters to assess your exposure and manage your risks is required. Leverage your resources by placing components of program responsibility on the employees. Additional keys to success include; establishing in-house resources and on-call expertise as needed; establishing a standard set of specifications for equipment; and understanding the local requirements e.g., multi-national, regional regulations; and leveraging available technology.

CPE, United States Ergonomics
Chandra Nair
CPE, Motorola
March 10, 2008: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Rosen Centre Hotel, Orlando, FL
This seminar emphasizes the ergonomics product design process and techniques used to quantify ergonomics performance. The purpose is to provide insight into how a human factors practitioner would interact with a product design team throughout the various stages of product development, with an emphasis on problem solving and validation. This session will include several case studies and hands-on, interactive demonstrations. A variety of measurement tools and equipment will be demonstrated, such as EMG, goniometry, force sensors, pressure mapping, and vibration. Published criteria and generally accepted thresholds and guidelines will be used as reference thresholds. This program is arranged under guidance of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.
